Mr Sayal reflected on the overwhelming responsibilities as CFO of a major gas company during audits, regulatory inquiries, and simultaneous demands, realising that while the job was complex, creating ease within complexity was key. He emphasized the universality of leadership principles and the importance of trusting and standing behind one’s team, irrespective of cultural differences.
Mr Magan emphasised the need to comprehend the broader business landscape beyond traditional finance expertise. The ability to foresee potential cracks in business structures and give realistic project updates while building consensus emerged as crucial aspects. Saying ‘no’ with caveats and providing regular updates were pivotal for managing complex tasks.
Mr Sarkar commended the younger generation’s technological acumen, their energy, and their forthrightness in expressing opinions. However, he stressed the importance of resourcefulness and problem-solving. He also noted a proclivity for instant gratification among younger professionals, attributing it to changing socio-economic landscapes. While valuing their energy and insights, he advocated for developing communication skills, particularly in translating numbers into compelling narratives—a critical skill set in the finance domain.
The conversation also delved into the strategic use of ‘yes’ and ‘no.’ Another pivotal aspect highlighted was the significance of having diverse viewpoints and seeking advice from trusted sources beyond immediate circles to make more objective decisions.
